Improving Building Access Control: Lost Master Key Presents Opportunity

Losing your keys is never fun and losing a master key to an important building is even worse. One GSA property manager in Nevada, however, saw their lost masterkey as an opportunity to rekey their entire building. This helped them improve security overall by enabling them to create distinct security systems for each occupant, making building entry more secure overall.

To update their keying system, this building manager met with leaders from each organization within the building to determine appropriate access privileges. Each employee would be able to enter the areas they needed to have access to, but no other areas. This included non-government employees who worked in the building, security staff, and visitors, who had their own access points. In other words, no unauthorized person can enter any part of the building that they were not allowed to be in. The only people who now have the grand master keys are the GSA property managers themselves.

Our friends at DL O&M joint venture in Reno, Nevada were tasked with overseeing this rekey operation. Together with Desert Locksmiths, a local locksmith that specializes in digitally monitored key systems, they were able to remove the building’s original locksets and reinstall new ones. Chief Engineer Ron Bemis and HVAC Mechanics Tim Hunt, Charlie Granelli, and Todd Linley personally handled the re-pin process and Ron Bemis provided cleanup for the locksets that were missed in the planning process.

We are proud to be affiliated with the DL O&M team.
